The
Pioneers of Western Pennsylvania's Environmental Transformation
Long before Pittsburgh knew it had environmental problems, there
were visionaries who saw how man's impact on the environmenthere
and around the worldhad to be addressed. They used their talents,
their influence, and their ingenuity to effect change that is still
evident in the Pittsburgh-area environment today. Their work was
the catalyst that helped bring about Pittsburgh's dramatic environmental
transformation and set in motion cultural, political, legislative,
economic, and technological innovations that impacted this region's
relationship with the environment. Equally important, they pioneered
the environmental movement that saved Pittsburgh from certain ecological
disaster and eventually led to sweeping advances in environmental
stewardship and management around the world.
